MEET NIKKI FROM PUREGLOW...
HEY NIKKI! CAN YOU START BY SHARING THE BIG IDEA BEHIND PURE GLOW?
The whole concept is to bring healthy, seasonal, freshly made juice and food to the Perth community. We understand that most people want to be healthy, but many just don’t have the time. So we are hoping to bridge that gap by delivering it to their doorsteps!
... AND HOW DOES YOUR PASSION DRIVE YOU TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY WITHIN THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS INDUSTRY?
I think both Rhyanna and I are passionate about the same things - looking after and understanding your body, and finding a really healthy sense of ‘balance’ in life. We are both really busy and have our own life goals and aspirations - we know that this service is definitely something that we would both be drawn to, and therefore we 100% believe in what we do. So promoting it, and continually improving the service is a no brainer for us. The passion and drive comes from truly believing in whatever you do.
HOW DOES NUTRITION INFLUENCE AN INDIVIDUAL'S SENSE OF NOURISHMENT?
It’s pretty simple - our bodies were never designed to break down the amount of chemicals, additives, preservatives and toxins that we do today. It’s not surprising that the population is becoming more and more unhealthy or that our bodies are struggling with what seems to now be ‘every day’ symptoms such as bloating, headaches, IBS, hormonal issues, broken sleep, amongst many others.
These symptoms aren’t ‘normal’ though, and that’s the problem. We have become SO used to experiencing them and many of us fail to listen to what our bodies are telling us. Food can definitely be one of the best sources of medicine. By simply removing the junk and re-introducing fresh wholefoods and plenty of vegetables, our bodies will reap the benefits. Over the long term, many of those problems and symptoms will go away by just making better daily food choices.
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
I don’t actually have just one source of inspiration. I would say I draw my inspiration from so many different people - family, friends, colleagues, previous employers... I am so lucky to be surrounded by the people that I have in my life because literally every single one of them inspires me daily to be better, do better, learn more, challenge myself, and ultimately to keep growing and growing.
HOW HAS YOUR JOURNEY TO DATE SHAPED YOUR ROLE AT PURE GLOW?
Well I guess the most obvious one is that I have brought the food element into Pure Glow. Prior to me joining, Pure Glow only did the juice component and now we’ve merged the two businesses together and created a ‘full package’ I suppose.
So from that perspective, I have brought the recipes, the nutritional know-how, and the ethos that NOOD always had with regards to the food offering.
My role at Pure Glow now is Co-Director with Rhyanna, but also the Branding Director - so my role is to manage and market the business, grow the brand awareness and promote our message in the best possible way. I am super proud of the brand that I created with NOOD, and I learnt SO much about what to do/not to do when creating and building a brand so I’m excited to bring all of those learnings into Pure Glow and work alongside the existing team here who are all absolutely amazing.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE SUSTAINABILITY ELEMENT OF YOUR BUSINESS?
It's hugely important. During each production day, all of our recipes are worked out to the exact litre or gram, ensuring that we have very, very minimal waste (if any).
Our vegetable and fruit scraps are collected daily by a company called ‘SAM’ (sustainable aspect management) - where they are turned into compost and fertiliser for the community gardens around Perth.
And lastly, our packaging is all recyclable or compostable. The bottles are all glass and we do encourage all of our customers to return them so that we can recycle and reuse whenever possible. Alternatively we encourage that they use the bottles themselves at home for storage of herbs, spices - even to grow plants out of! The food packaging is bought through a company called VegWare Australia and is totally compostable as well.
So yes, we definitely try our best and will always have sustainability at front of mind as the company grows.
IN YOUR EYES, HOW IS PURE GLOW MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE?
I think the difference we try to make is two fold - one being through the physical delivery of food and juice to people who are time poor, and secondly through the education component of which Rhyanna and I are SO passionate about.
The food and juice of course is the ‘product’ and we are so adamant about it being seasonal, fresh, local, and of course absolutely delicious! And then in trying to reach as many people as we can through the delivery across Perth - we deliver 3 times a week, and have options and prices to suit everyone - so we want to have a solution for as many people as we can.
We hope that through people physically tasting the food it will educate them more and more on how healthy food can also be delicious and simple to make. We have our website (www.pureglow.com.au), in which we regularly put up blog posts on health and wellness, recipes for people to try and home etc. Both Rhyanna and I are very active in the Perth community - regularly speaking at, hosting or teaching others on health, wellness, nutrition or movement.
We hope that Pure Glow can be a channel of inspiration and therefore create a positive difference - whether it be small or large, in as many people as possible.
CAN YOU SHARE SOME TIPS WITH OUR COLLECTIVE ON DEVELOPING A HEALTHY DIET?
A healthy diet will differ from person to person depending on how their body digests foods, what allergies or intolerances they might have, their environment, and what foods they have accessible to them.
As a general rule of thumb however, try to make sure everything you eat is as natural and as unprocessed as possible - so opt for brown rice instead of white, make your own sauces and dressings (as opposed to buying bottled ones) etc. If you can, try to include fermented foods such as tempeh, kimchi, or sauerkraut into your meals, that can also do wonders for your gut health. Lastly, drink plenty of water! It still shocks me how many people just don’t get enough H20 into their diets … it’s essential!
WHAT’S YOUR MESSAGE TO ANYONE WHO STRUGGLES TO NOURISH THEIR MIND, BODY AND SOUL?
...Not to be too hard on yourself. I think there is an overwhelming amount of information out there and when someone decides that they want to make healthier choices they often charge at it like a bull in a china shop - they try to change too much too quickly, set unrealistic expectations for themselves, and then let themselves down when they have one ‘slip up’.
So my advice would be to start slow - set yourself small goals. Perhaps this is just one thing a week - for example “next week I am going to clean out my fridge and pantry and re-stock it with foods which aren’t processed or packaged”, or “next week I am going to attend one new yoga class”. As the weeks progress and you keep adding more and more things each week, it won’t be long until your whole lifestyle has changed without you even realising it.
Having a friend or family member to embark on this journey with also helps a a lot as you can hold each other accountable and keep the other person motivated throughout.
... AND FINALLY, WHAT’S NEXT FOR PURE GLOW?
So many things! I can’t say EVERYTHING we have going on but at this stage we are focusing on reaching as many people as we can and continuing to get the awareness out there into the Perth community that being ‘time poor’ no longer means that you have to compromise your health.
Rhyanna and I are looking at running a few ‘Pure Glow Events’ over the course of the year, and perhaps even an overseas retreat! So keep an eye out for that…
We are also looking at introducing a few new products to our existing range so that will be awesome as well. We currently have our own Probiotics, Activated Nuts, and delicious ‘Watermelon Jerky’ - which can all be shipped Australia wide and internationally. So definitely reaching more people outside of Perth is on our to do list.
