The Genius in the In-Between: What Your Brain Is Doing Right Before You Wake Up


I'd been circling the same health decision for four days. I’d made a pro’s and cons lists, been for a walk, had a long a conversation with a friend, meditated on it. And nothing landed. The next morning, somewhere quiet and liminal - before I actually opened my eyes or engaged thought - the clarity came and the answer was just... there. Fully formed. Obvious, even. I hadn't asked for it. It arrived like it had been patiently waiting outside the door the whole time.

Has this ever happened to you, too? The solution that shows up in the shower, or in that soft, unfocused minute before your feet hit the floor for the day. Not after coffee. Not after you've checked your phone. Before all that, decisions descend and problems resolve in the peaceful in-between.

That's not a coincidence, and it's not some woo-woo magic trick. It's a special liminal space created by a specific, nameable brain state, and it turns out to be one of the most interesting places your mind ever visits.

The state that isn't quite sleep and isn't quite awake

Sleep scientists have names for both edges of sleep. Hypnagogia is the drift into sleep—the two or so minutes where your muscles loosen and stray images and sounds start to surface while you're still half aware of the room. Hypnopompia is its mirror image: the drift out, the minutes right before full wakefulness, when you're surfacing but haven't quite broken the surface yet.

In both states, your brain runs on a different mix than normal waking life. Instead of the fast, busy beta waves of active alertness, you're closer to theta and alpha—the same slower rhythms associated with deep meditation and daydreaming. And critically, the prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain that edits, filters, second-guesses, and keeps your thinking neat and linear—hasn't fully clocked in yet. Your inner critic is, quite literally, still getting dressed for the day.

That combination of loosened editorial control plus a brain still buzzing with the associative, slower-wave activity of sleep is exactly the kind of environment where unlikely connections and creative problem-solving get to surface.

What the research actually shows

The most rigorous evidence we have comes from the falling-asleep side, not the waking-up side, and it's worth being honest about that distinction.

In a 2021 study published in Science Advances, researchers at the Paris Brain Institute gave 103 people a math problem with a hidden shortcut, then had them rest with the chance to drift toward sleep. People who spent at least 15 seconds in N1—the lightest stage of sleep, the doorway into hypnagogia—were more than twice as likely to spot the hidden rule as people who stayed fully awake: 83% versus 30%. But if they slipped past N1 into deeper sleep, the effect vanished entirely. There's a genuine sweet spot, and it's narrow.

On the waking side, the strongest related evidence comes from a 2004 study in Nature, in which researchers found that people were almost three times more likely to discover a hidden mathematical shortcut after a full night's sleep than after an equivalent stretch of wakefulness. Separate research has shown that REM sleep in particular seems to prime associative networks—loosening the usual boundaries between unrelated ideas, which is part of why dreams feel so strange and why waking from them can hand you a connection you wouldn't have made in the day, with your guard up.

A neurosurgeon's take on what's happening in there

I went looking for more on this and landed on a recent conversation Mel Robbins had with Dr. Rahul Jandial—a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist at City of Hope who's spent his career studying the brain, and who wrote an entire book on the science of dreaming. One line from that conversation has stuck with me since: "Dreams and dreaming are a gift from your mind to you. In the safety of sleep, we can dare in ways we wouldn't while we're awake."

Dr. Jandial's central point is that dreaming isn't random noise your brain generates to pass the time. It's your mind continuing to work through memories, emotions, and relationships long after you've stopped consciously thinking about them. The dreams you shrug off on your way to the shower may be surfacing exactly what your waking mind has been avoiding. Interesting.

This reframes the hypnopompic window in a useful way. It isn't just a neutral gap between sleep and alertness—it's the handoff point where whatever your dreaming brain has been working on gets one brief chance to cross over into conscious awareness before the day's noise buries it.

Neuroscientists increasingly think the default mode network—the brain system active during rest, daydreaming, and much of sleep—plays a starring role here. Overnight, it helps replay and recombine fragments of the day's experience, testing new arrangements the way an editor tries different cuts of the same scene. The moment you wake up, before the executive, evaluative part of your brain fully powers back on, you get brief access to that freshly reorganized material—before it gets filed away, tidied, or dismissed.

So: is what you're describing "unconscious"? Loosely, yes—it sits outside deliberate, effortful thought. But it's a different mechanism from the sensory-bandwidth story in my last blog piece, about how much raw information your senses take in versus what reaches awareness. This is less about bandwidth and more about timing, about catching your mind in the narrow window after it's done its overnight editing, but before the inner critic reopens for business.

Your mind, working the night shift

Think of it like a film editor who works while you sleep. All day, you hand over raw footage—conversations, worries, half-finished thoughts, the argument you didn't get to finish, the numbers that didn't add up. Overnight, the editor doesn't just file it away. She's in the cutting room, splicing pieces together in combinations you'd never have tried on purpose, testing which cuts actually work.

Right when you wake up, for a few unguarded minutes, she hands you the reel before the studio notes come in. That's the window. Reach for your phone, and you replace her rough cut with a hundred other people's finished films before you've even looked at your own.

This is also, not coincidentally, why some of the most famous problem-solvers in history tried to engineer their way into this state on purpose. Thomas Edison and Salvador Dalí both used a version of the same trick: nap in a chair holding a heavy object—a ball, a key—over a metal plate or tray. The instant they drifted past that N1 threshold into real sleep, their hand would relax, the object would clatter down, and the noise would yank them back to the surface—hypnopompic, mid-edit, holding whatever the editor had just handed them. Genius!

Using this on purpose

So how can you capitalise on this calm and clarity? Is it possible to induce it on purpose? The answer is yes:

Give yourself a runway. Leave your phone alone for the first two or three minutes after you wake up. Just lie there. Dr. Jandial found the emotions and ideas still sitting with you in that window can offer real insight into whatever you're working through—but only if you get to them before a notification does. The window is short, and one glance at your phone closes it.

Keep a notebook within arm's reach. Hypnopompic and hypnagogic material dissolves almost as fast as dreams do. If a thought arrives in that window, write it down before you're fully vertical, or it's gone by breakfast. This is also the starting point for training yourself to remember dreams more generally—the moment you open your eyes is the only moment you'll reliably have access to them.

Load the problem before you sleep. Edison and Dalí didn't leave it to chance—they went to sleep holding the specific question they wanted solved. Dr. Jandial's research points to something similar: the last five minutes before sleep matter disproportionately, because your brain absorbs your final thoughts of the day and carries them into the material it works with overnight. Naming your unresolved problem right before bed seems to prime the overnight editing process to actually work on it.

Try the deliberate doze. A short daytime rest where you let yourself approach—but not fall fully into—sleep can access the same N1 sweet spot the research points to. Set a gentle alarm or hold something you'll drop when you nod off.

Train the muscle, not just the memory. Dream recall works like most habits: through repetition and cueing. Ask yourself "was I dreaming?" a few times during the day, and over time your brain starts asking the same question while you're actually asleep. That question is also the seed of lucid dreaming—becoming aware you're dreaming while it's still happening. Dr. Jandial treats this as a genuine, learnable skill rather than a party trick, and with practice, some people can even nudge a dream in a direction they choose. It's a slower project than the other steps here, but it turns the in-between from something that just happens to you into something you can gently steer.

Pay attention if the same dream keeps showing up. Dr. Jandial's work also points out that recurring nightmares aren't always random static—they can be your brain's early warning system, flagging something in your mental or emotional life that needs attention rather than avoidance. If a dream keeps returning, it may be worth asking what it's pointing at instead of hoping it stops.

Write it down, then verify it when awake. Your inner critic is offline for a reason in this state, which is exactly why it's a poor time for major decisions. Capture the insight, then bring your fully awake, fully skeptical mind back to it later before you act.

And let's be honest about the rest of it, too. Some mornings there's no drift at all. On Thursdays, I'm up before my body would ever choose to be and out the door before there's room for any insights or solutions to download as I doze. And most days, it isn't an alarm that wakes me—it's a cry, startlingly loud for how small the person making it still is, wanting to know why breakfast isn't on the table yet, (even though it's still dark outside) or wailing about where their teddy was last seen. There's no gentle surfacing. My senses are assaulted out of slumber and my mind and body are hurtled quite harshly into the day.

If that's the phase you're in - young kids, an early start, a life that doesn't leave room for lingering, listen up. The in-between hasn't gone anywhere. It's just not available most days right now, and that's alright. This isn't a practice you're failing at. Some mornings you'll ripple into the day. Some mornings you'll hurtle too. Both are allowed, and the door opens again the next time your body and your life happen to let it.

Your best thinking doesn't always happen at your desk, wide awake, trying hard. Sometimes it happens on the night shift, in a cutting room you don't remember entering, handed to you in the two minutes before the world gets loud again—on the mornings the world gives you those two minutes at all.
